If your child is overly concerned about his or her looks, make sure you emphasize what's really important - the beauty of their soul. As this video (created by Dove) shows, much of what our culture defines as beauty is manufactured. Teach your child to focus on what lasts forever - a beautiful soul.
Your words will contrast those of our culture's "only-skin-deep" propaganda. Share this video with your children and ask them what they think about it. I particularly like the end when the two girls are walking in front of the billboard. How symbolic!
Remember to celebrate your child's uniqueness and teach them to love themselves for who they are. The best way to teach a child is through modeling so make sure you're doing the same for yourself.
